Contributions

Only persons ordinarily resident in Alberta may make political contributions to political parties, constituency associations, candidates, nomination contestants or leadership contestants (political entities).

A contribution is any money, real property, goods or services, or the use of real property, goods or services, provided to or for the benefit of a political entity without compensation from the political entity to the donor.

The above political entities must be registered with Elections Alberta prior to accepting contributions. Once registered, political parties may accept contributions at any time; constituency associations may accept contributions at any time except during a campaign period for an election; candidates may accept contributions only during a campaign period for an election; nomination contestants may accept contributions only during a campaign period for a nomination contest; and leadership contestants may accept contributions only during a campaign period for a leadership contest.

An advertising contribution is any money, real property, goods or services, or the use of real property, goods or services provided to or for the benefit of a third party, without compensation from that third party, for the purpose of election advertising or political advertising, whether given before or after the third party becomes registered with Elections Alberta.

Only persons ordinarily resident in Alberta may make election advertising contributions to third party advertisers.

A third party must register with Elections Alberta when it has incurred or plans to incur election advertising expenses of at least $1,000 or has accepted or plans to accept at least $1,000 in election advertising contributions.
