The URL, electionsab.ca, appears designed to mislead by mimicking our legitimate website’s URL, elections.ab.ca, and exploit concerns about the recent unauthorized use of the List of Electors.

This site produces a list of fictitious names, addresses, phone numbers, and fictitious “elector ID” numbers. The data generated is completely fake and is not derived from the List of Electors.

“I believe this disinformation activity is intended to “spoof” Elections Alberta and is an attempt to reduce public confidence in my Office and electoral events in Alberta,” said Chief Electoral Officer, Gordon McClure. “Disinformation activities of this nature were not included in the newly created “Deepfake” provisions in the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act, and my Office does not have the legislative authority or jurisdiction to act or investigate this site. For these reasons, I have contacted the appropriate enforcement and cyber security agencies and made them aware of the existence of this website.  I am also taking steps to attempt to have this website taken down.”

Another recall petition was not received prior to the canvassing period expiry date, and is deemed invalid and ineligible to be authorized, as required by s.7(2) of the Recall Act.

Accordingly, the Chief Electoral Officer has made an order declaring the recall petition terminated for the following Member of the Legislative Assembly due to withdrawal of the petition by the applicant:

  • Electoral Division 83 – Marie Renaud, St. Albert

The following recall petition was not received from the applicant by the end of the 90-day canvassing period and is ineligible to be authorized. Signature sheets submitted late are not counted. This recall petition is deemed invalid.

  • Electoral Division 47 – Peter Guthrie, Airdrie-Cochrane

As required by s.9 of the Act, the applicants, the MLAs, the leaders of the registered parties to whom each of the MLA belong, and the Speaker of the Legislation Assembly have received written notice reporting the results.

Next steps
Within two days of the publication of the recall petition results, the applicants must:

  • Return all copies of the recall petition and all canvasser identification documents to Elections Alberta;
  • Destroy all copies of signature sheets, including blank copies, made by the applicant, their team, or registered canvassers, and
  • Submit a signed affidavit to Elections Alberta confirming the petition and all signature sheets have been returned and all copies destroyed as directed.

Within 30 days, after the petition submission date or petition withdrawal, or within 30 days after the petition canvassing period expires, whichever is earlier:

  • Each authorized participant’s chief financial officer must submit a recall petition expense limit report consisting of a financial statement, a contribution report, an expense report, and supporting information and documents. Accordingly, the Chief Electoral Officer has made an order declaring the recall petitions terminated for the following Members of the Legislative Assembly:

  • Electoral Division 53 – Camrose, Jackie Lovely
  • Electoral Division 82 – Spruce Grove-Stony Plain, Searle Turton

Elections Alberta has completed petition verification for the following seven recall petitions. After conducting the first stage of the verification process for each of the petitions – the preliminary count – it was confirmed there were insufficient signatures to meet the required thresholds, and the verification counts ended. Recall Petition Background Information:
Once a recall petition is returned by the applicant on or before the end of the canvassing period, Elections Alberta must complete petition verification within 21 days. The recall petition verification process includes:

  • Preliminary signature count on petition signature sheets submitted;
  • Confirmation that only the petition signature sheets as provided to the applicant were used in the collection of signatures;
  • Confirmation that only original signatures have been collected;
  • A review of each signature to ensure the required information was provided (full name, physical address, contact information, date, signature);
  • Confirmation that each signature on the petition was witnessed by a registered canvasser;
  • A random sample to confirm the signatories’ addresses are in the electoral district; and,
  • Contacting a random sample of signatories to confirm they signed the petition.

Please note: If it becomes clear during any part of the verification the count will not meet the 60% threshold, no further verification is done, the process ends, and results are reported.

If the petition is successful, the Lieutenant Governor in Council will order a recall vote to be conducted within four months of the date on which the successful petition results are published.

Today, the Notice of Initiative Petition was issued and published on Elections Alberta’s website, as required by s.3(2) of the Act. As required by s.2.2(2)(b), a copy of the application has been provided to the Minister of Justice.

Approved Initiative Petition Information
The approved citizen initiative application is for a legislative proposal as follows:

Subject matter of intended application: No New Coal Mining in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains

Proposal: The Government of Alberta shall prohibit through legislation all coal exploration and mining activities within the Eastern Slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, other than mines that are in actual production as of January 1, 2026. For clarity, this prohibition includes Northback Holdings’ Grassy Mountain Project and Valory Resources’ Blackstone Project as well as any projects to expand any producing mines.

Next steps for each recall petition

  1. The applicant registers canvassers. Canvassers must be eligible electors who have lived in the electoral division in the previous 3 months prior to canvassing. They must comply with the Canvasser Code of Conduct and any guidelines for canvassing issued by the Chief Electoral Officer. Only registered canvassers may collect signatures on the petition.
  2. The petition applicant and registered canvassers may collect signatures from eligible electors for a period of 90 days. Signatures must be collected using the recall petition signature sheets in the format provided by Elections Alberta. Signatures collected on other forms will not be accepted.
  3. Only eligible electors may sign. To be eligible, individuals must be electors residing in the electoral division for a period of at least 3 months immediately before the date they sign the petition.
  4. The petition applicant must submit all petition signature sheets and witness affidavits to Elections Alberta on or before March 10, 2026. Any petition signature sheets received after March 10, 2026, will not be accepted.
  5. Elections Alberta will verify the petition within 21 days from the date the petition is submitted (by March 31, 2026, if the petition is received on March 10). More information about the verification process is available on our Recall Process webpage.
  6. Within 7 days after completing verification (by April 7, 2026), Elections Alberta will report the results to the petition applicant, the named member, the party leader, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Results will be published on the Elections Alberta website.

  • Be an eligible elector residing in the electoral division for a period of at least 3 months immediately before the date they sign the petition.

The Recall Act s.6(2) also requires canvassers to swear an affidavit that, to the best of their knowledge, the witnessed signatures were provided by individuals eligible to sign the recall petition.

During the signature collection period, the petition applicant is responsible for:

  • providing copies of the petition signature sheets to canvassers,
  • submitting completed canvasser applications to Elections Alberta (incomplete or ineligible applications will be returned to the petition applicant for correction),
  • answering Albertan’s questions about signature collection and their petition, and
  • providing canvassers with information on the process, timelines, contacts, supplies, and any other training and direction they feel is necessary to complete the canvassing period and ensure canvassers are following the requirements for signature collection.

Elections Alberta is responsible for:

  • reviewing the canvasser applications and returning incomplete or invalid applications to the petition applicant,
  • registering canvassers, and
  • providing each registered canvasser with identification documents (ID) that must be produced on request while canvassing.

Elections Alberta will send out canvasser identification within 2 to 3 business days of receiving completed and valid applications from the petition applicant. This may be extended should a significant volume of canvasser applications for badges be received in a short time period. If Canada Post service is disrupted, an alternative delivery method will be used until normal service resumes.

Voter Eligibility
Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years of age or older on Election Day are eligible to vote if they are an ordinary resident of Edmonton-Ellerslie, Edmonton-Strathcona, or Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills. If you are uncertain if you reside in one of these electoral divisions, check “Where Do I Vote” on the Elections Alberta website.

Electors voting today must vote at their assigned voting location. Electors can find their assigned voting location:

Voter Identification
To vote in provincial by-elections, electors are required to prove their identity and current physical address. There are several ways to do this, including:

  • providing one piece of Government-issued photo ID, including the voter’s full name and current physical address,
  • providing two pieces of ID, both containing the voter’s full name and one that lists their current physical address,

Announcement of Official Results
In the days following Election Day, returning office staff review the materials from the unofficial count to verify results. These confirmations are then reported as official results and released to the public, with the winning candidates officially declared. This is known as the

Official Announcement of the Results and is legislated to take place on the tenth day after Election Day, which is Thursday, July 3, 2025.

These two volumes include information on the provincial enumeration and election, including preparation activities, event costs, financial disclosures of political participants, recommendations for legislative change, and detailed electoral division results and maps.

The 2023 Provincial General Election was Alberta’s first fixed date election, held on Monday, May 29, 2023, following a 28-day election period. A total of 1,777,315 electors voted in the election, resulting in a voter turnout of 60.5% (67.5% in 2019).

Despite wildfire activity throughout the Writ Period, which impacted thousands of electors and political participants, the 2023 Provincial General Election was Alberta’s most accessible election. Improvements such as expanded advance voting and mobile voting options, increased special ballot access, and the introduction of voter assist terminals were embraced by electors, with 47.2% of electors using an alternate voting method. This included 757,453 ballots cast during advance voting, 24,282 cast during mobile voting, and 51,351 voting by special ballot.

These expanded voting opportunities–along with the dedication, commitment, and responsiveness of Elections Alberta staff, returning office staff, and election officers–enabled the election to be successfully conducted in all 87 electoral divisions in Alberta.

“My appreciation goes out to the over 13,000 Albertans who worked tirelessly in these very challenging circumstances to provide timely and efficient information and voting services to voters,” said Chief Electoral Officer, Glen Resler.

The Chief Electoral Officer has included recommendations in the report for legislative change. These recommendations are intended to further encourage voter participation, build flexibility and resilience into elections to address and mitigate emergency situations, clarify language, and better align the Election Act and Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act.

As of March 26, 2024, there were over 2.9 million electors on the Post Election Day List of Electors. The election had a total cost of $36,749,588, or $12.50 per registered elector. The enumeration had a total cost of $2,378,959, or $9.67 per participating household.

]]> Elections Alberta Releases Post Election Day List of Electors https://www.elections.ab.ca/resources/media/news-releases/elections-alberta-releases-post-election-day-list-of-electors/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 17:00:19 +0000 https://www.elections.ab.ca/?p=13508 EDMONTON – Following a Provincial General Election, Elections Alberta releases an updated List of Electors to registered political parties and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The number of names on the Post Election Day List of Electors is also used to determine the number of signatures required for petitions relating to citizen initiatives, recall of MLAs, or forming a new political party. These thresholds will be in place until a new list is generated after the next Provincial General Election.

The total number of names on the Post Election Day List of Electors is 2,939,762.

Citizen Initiative Petitions

Electors can use the citizen initiative process to have a legislative or policy proposal introduced in the Legislative Assembly or have a constitutional referendum conducted.

  • Petitions for a legislative or policy proposal require signatures from 10 per cent of provincial electors, or 293,976 signatures.
  • Petitions for a constitutional referendum require signatures from 20 per cent of provincial electors (587,952 signatures), with the 20 per cent threshold reached in at least 2/3 of electoral divisions.

Recall Petitions

A recall petition for a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) requires signatures from 40 per cent of the electors in the electoral division on the Post Election Day List of Electors. The number of signatures required in each electoral division for a successful recall petition is available at https://www.elections.ab.ca/recall-initiative/recall/number-of-signatures-required-for-recall.

The threshold numbers are only applicable for recall petitions relating to MLAs and do not impact recall petitions for municipal officials.

Petitions to Form a New Political Party

One of the methods to register a new political party is submitting a petition containing signatures from at least 0.3 per cent of the total number of electors that were eligible to vote in the last general election. Based on the Post Election Day List of Electors, the number of signatures required for a petition is 8,819.
