New Citizen Initiative Application Approved, Notice of Initiative Petition Issued

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer, Gordon McClure, has received a citizen initiative proposal application and has determined it meets the requirements of section 2(3) of the Citizen Initiative Act. Today, the Notice of Initiative Petition was issued, as required by the Act, and published on Elections Alberta’s website.

The approved citizen initiative application is for a policy proposal as follows:
Subject: Alberta Funds Public Schools
Proposed Question: Should the Government of Alberta end its current practice of allocating public funds to accredited independent (private) schools?
Proponent: Alicia Taylor
The Notice of Initiative Petition, application, contact information, and statement provided by the proponent are available on Elections Alberta’s website on the Current Initiatives Petition page.
Next steps
- The proponent must appoint a chief financial officer within 7 days (by October 14, 2025).
- Once the 7-day publication period is complete and a chief financial officer has been appointed, Elections Alberta will:
- issue the citizen initiative petition,
- publish a notice on the Current Initiative Petitions page of our website indicating the petition has been issued, specifying the signature collection period dates, and the number of signatures required for a successful petition, and
- issue the citizen initiative petition signature sheets in the format that must be used. Signatures collected on other forms will not be accepted.
