New Recall Petition Issued

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer, Gordon McClure, has received a petition application to recall the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Electoral Division 63 – Grande Prairie, Nolan Dyck, and has determined it meets the requirements of section 3(1) of the Recall Act.

As required by s.3(3) of the Act, written notice of the approval was issued on October 22, 2025, to the:

  • applicant,
  • MLA Nolan Dyck, member named in the application,
  • Honourable Danielle Smith, leader of the registered party to which the member named belongs, and
  • Honourable Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

Section 3(4)(b) gives the member named the right to submit a statement in response to the applicant’s statement. The member’s statement was received by the Chief Electoral Officer within the response period as specified in s.3.1 of the Act.

Today, the recall petition was issued and the Notice of Recall Petition was published on Elections Alberta’s website on the Current Recall Petitions page, as required by s.3.2 of the Act.

Next steps

  1. The petition applicant registers canvassers. Canvassers must be eligible electors who have lived in the Grande Prairie electoral division in the previous 3 months prior to canvassing. They must comply with the Canvasser Code of Conduct and any guidelines for canvassing issued by the Chief Electoral Officer. Only registered canvassers may collect signatures on the petition.
  2. The petition applicant and registered canvassers may collect signatures from eligible electors for a period of 90 days. Signatures must be collected using the recall petition signature sheets in the format provided by Elections Alberta. Signatures collected on other forms will not be accepted.
  3. Only eligible electors may sign. To be eligible, individuals must be electors residing in the Grande Prairie electoral division for a period of at least 3 months immediately before the date they sign the petition.
  4. The petition applicant must submit all petition signature sheets and witness affidavits to Elections Alberta on or before February 19, 2026. Any petition signature sheets received after February 19, 2026, will not be accepted.
  5. Elections Alberta will verify the petition within 21 days from the date the petition is submitted (by March 13, 2026, if the petition is received on February 19). More information about the verification process is available on our Recall Process webpage.
  6. Within 7 days after completing verification (by March 20, 2026), Elections Alberta will report the results to the petition applicant, the named member, the party leader, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Results will be published on the Elections Alberta website.

Petition Signature Requirements

For signatures to be valid, individuals signing the petition must:

  • Be an eligible elector residing in the Grande Prairie electoral division for a period of at least 3 months immediately before the date they sign the petition.
  • Print the required name, residential address, and contact information legibly, confirm they are an eligible elector, and date it on the date they sign.
  • Sign the petition only once and only during the 90-day petition signing period.
  • Sign their signature. Only original physical signatures are valid. Digital or online signatures will not be accepted.

A registered canvasser must witness each signature collected and sign as a witness on each signature sheet. The Recall Act s.6(2) also requires canvassers to swear an affidavit that, to the best of their knowledge, the witnessed signatures were provided by individuals eligible to sign the recall petition.

During the signature collection period, the petition applicant is responsible for:

  • providing copies of the petition signature sheets to canvassers,
  • submitting completed canvasser applications to Elections Alberta (incomplete or ineligible applications will be returned to the proponent for correction),
  • answering Albertan’s questions about signature collection and their petition, and
  • providing canvassers with information on the process, timelines, contacts, supplies, and any other training and direction they feel is necessary to complete the canvassing period and ensure canvassers are following the requirements for signature collection.

Elections Alberta is responsible for:

  • reviewing the canvasser applications and returning incomplete or invalid applications to the petition applicant,
  • registering canvassers, and
  • providing each registered canvasser with identification documents (ID) that must be produced on request while canvassing.

Elections Alberta will send out canvasser identification within 2 to 3 business days of receiving completed and valid applications from the petition applicant. This may be extended should a significant volume of canvasser applications for badges be received in a short time period. If Canada Post service is disrupted, an alternative delivery method will be used until postal service resumes.
