Registered Parties Must Be Incorporated by January 1, 2026
December 18, 2025
EDMONTON – Legislative changes brought about by the passage of Bill 54, which took effect July 4, 2025, to section 7(2.03) of the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act (EFCDA) now require all registered political parties to be incorporated as a society under the Societies Act, a company under Part 9 of the Companies Act, or a corporation under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (Canada).
Section 56(1) of the EFCDA requires all the parties to provide proof of incorporation to the Chief Electoral Officer on or before January 1, 2026, or request an extension subject to the Chief Electoral Officer’s approval.
All currently registered political parties have been informed of this requirement. In the event a registered party does not comply, the EFCDA directs the Chief Electoral Officer to immediately cancel the registration of the party.
