Election Commissioner Role

The Election Commissioner’s role is to ensure compliance with and enforcement of provincial electoral legislation.

The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (Elections Alberta) reports to the Legislative Assembly and is independent from the Government of Alberta. The Election Commissioner is an independent role within Elections Alberta.

To facilitate investigations, the Election Commissioner has the full powers of a commissioner under the Public Inquiries Act. The Election Commissioner can initiate investigations in response to a complaint from the public, at the request of the Chief Electoral Officer, or  under the proactive initiative of the Election Commissioner, or at the request of the Chief Electoral Officer.

Overall, the Election Commissioner plays a vital role in safeguarding the democratic process by overseeing compliance with election laws, investigating potential breaches, and taking appropriate actions to address any issues that arise.
