Elections Alberta remains committed to delivering electoral events that are accessible, transparent, and administered with integrity.
- Deepfake videos or audio can convincingly show politicians or election officials saying or doing things they never did.
- Rapid improvements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) make it increasingly hard for voters to tell what is real and what is not.
- Even a small amount of forged media could suppress votes, distort debate, or delegitimize election results.
What are the penalties?

- Administrative penalties for creating, distributing, and publishing deepfakes can be up to $10,000 per day for a person, or $100,000 per day for an entity.
- Failing to comply with an order to remove and destroy a deepfake come with additional daily penalties of up to $10,000 for a person, or 100,000 for an entity.
