AI as a Source of Election Information

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as chatbots, search assistants, and AI-powered search tools are increasingly used to find and summarize information online. While these tools can be helpful, they are not official sources of election information and frequently cite incorrect information sources.

Many of the same best practices that apply to evaluating information online also apply when using AI tools. It’s important to verify information with trusted sources like Elections Alberta.

AI may be useful for ✅ Limitations and cautions ⚠️
  • Explaining election legislation in plain language.
  • Providing overviews of how elections work, or providing comparisons between different jurisdictions.
  • Summarizing publicly available information from multiple sources.
  • Offering guidance on how to evaluate information found online.
  • May provide inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated information.
  • May rely on sources that are not official or verified.
  • May oversimplify complex election processes that differ across jurisdictions.
  • Not a substitute for official election information.

AI tools can serve as a helpful starting point; however, be sure to always verify information using trusted, official sources. Elections Alberta is the official source for information about electoral events in Alberta.
